Proverbs

Chapter 26

KJV
RSV
NASB
As snow in summer, and as rain in harvest, so honour is not seemly for a fool. 1 Like snow in summer or rain in harvest, so honor is not fitting for a fool. 1 Like snow in summer and like rain in harvest, So honor is not fitting for a fool.
As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come. 2 Like a sparrow in its flitting, like a swallow in its flying, a curse that is causeless does not alight. 2 Like a sparrow in [its] flitting, like a swallow in [its] flying, So a curse without cause does not alight.
A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the fool's back. 3 A whip for the horse, a bridle for the ass, and a rod for the back of fools. 3 A whip is for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, And a rod for the back of fools.
Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. 4 Answer not a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him yourself. 4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly, Lest you also be like him.
Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. 5 Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own eyes. 5 Answer a fool as his folly [deserves], Lest he be wise in his own eyes.
He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage. 6 He who sends a message by the hand of a fool cuts off his own feet and drinks violence. 6 He cuts off [his own] feet, [and] drinks violence Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.
The legs of the lame are not equal: so is a parable in the mouth of fools. 7 Like a lame man's legs, which hang useless, is a proverb in the mouth of fools. 7 [Like] the legs [which] hang down from the lame, So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
As he that bindeth a stone in a sling, so is he that giveth honour to a fool. 8 Like one who binds the stone in the sling is he who gives honor to a fool. 8 Like one who binds a stone in a sling, So is he who gives honor to a fool.
As a thorn goeth up into the hand of a drunkard, so is a parable in the mouths of fools. 9 Like a thorn that goes up into the hand of a drunkard is a proverb in the mouth of fools. 9 [Like] a thorn [which] falls into the hand of a drunkard, So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
The great God that formed all things both rewardeth the fool, and rewardeth transgressors. 10 Like an archer who wounds everybody is he who hires a passing fool or drunkard. 10 [Like] an archer who wounds everyone, So is he who hires a fool or who hires those who pass by.
As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to his folly. 11 Like a dog that returns to his vomit is a fool that repeats his folly. 11 Like a dog that returns to its vomit Is a fool who repeats his folly.
Seest thou a man wise in his own conceit? there is more hope of a fool than of him. 12 Do you see a man who is wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 12 Do you see a man wise in his own eyes? There is more hope for a fool than for him.
The slothful man saith, There is a lion in the way; a lion is in the streets. 13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road! There is a lion in the streets!" 13 The sluggard says, "There is a lion in the road! A lion is in the open square!"
As the door turneth upon his hinges, so doth the slothful upon his bed. 14 As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed. 14 [As] the door turns on its hinges, So [does] the sluggard on his bed.
The slothful hideth his hand in his bosom; it grieveth him to bring it again to his mouth. 15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth. 15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; He is weary of bringing it to his mouth again.
The sluggard is wiser in his own conceit than seven men that can render a reason. 16 The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes than seven men who can answer discreetly. 16 The sluggard is wiser in his own eyes Than seven men who can give a discreet answer.
He that passeth by, and meddleth with strife belonging not to him, is like one that taketh a dog by the ears. 17 He who meddles in a quarrel not his own is like one who takes a passing dog by the ears. 17 [Like] one who takes a dog by the ears Is he who passes by [and] meddles with strife not belonging to him.
As a mad man who casteth firebrands, arrows, and death, 18 Like a madman who throws firebrands, arrows, and death, 18 Like a madman who throws Firebrands, arrows and death,
So is the man that deceiveth his neighbour, and saith, Am not I in sport? 19 is the man who deceives his neighbor and says, "I am only joking!" 19 So is the man who deceives his neighbor, And says, "Was I not joking?"
Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. 20 For lack of wood the fire goes out; and where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases. 20 For lack of wood the fire goes out, And where there is no whisperer, contention quiets down.
As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. 21 As charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. 21 [Like] charcoal to hot embers and wood to fire, So is a contentious man to kindle strife.
The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. 22 The words of a whisperer are like delicious morsels; they go down into the inner parts of the body. 22 The words of a whisperer are like dainty morsels, And they go down into the innermost parts of the body.
Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. 23 Like the glaze covering an earthen vessel are smooth lips with an evil heart. 23 [Like] an earthen vessel overlaid with silver dross Are burning lips and a wicked heart.
He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; 24 He who hates, dissembles with his lips and harbors deceit in his heart; 24 He who hates disguises [it] with his lips, But he lays up deceit in his heart.
When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. 25 when he speaks graciously, believe him not, for there are seven abominations in his heart; 25 When he speaks graciously, do not believe him, For there are seven abominations in his heart.
Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation. 26 though his hatred be covered with guile, his wickedness will be exposed in the assembly. 26 [Though his] hatred covers itself with guile, His wickedness will be revealed before the assembly.
Whoso diggeth a pit shall fall therein: and he that rolleth a stone, it will return upon him. 27 He who digs a pit will fall into it, and a stone will come back upon him who starts it rolling. 27 He who digs a pit will fall into it, And he who rolls a stone, it will come back on him.
A lying tongue hateth those that are afflicted by it; and a flattering mouth worketh ruin. 28 A lying tongue hates its victims, and a flattering mouth works ruin. 28 A lying tongue hates those it crushes, And a flattering mouth works ruin.
