Proverbs

Chapter 19

KJV
RSV
NASB
Better is the poor that walketh in his integrity, than he that is perverse in his lips, and is a fool. 1 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity than a man who is perverse in speech, and is a fool. 1 Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity Than he who is perverse in speech and is a fool.
Also, that the soul be without knowledge, it is not good; and he that hasteth with his feet sinneth. 2 It is not good for a man to be without knowledge, and he who makes haste with his feet misses his way. 2 Also it is not good for a person to be without knowledge, And he who makes haste with his feet errs.
The foolishness of man perverteth his way: and his heart fretteth against the LORD. 3 When a man's folly brings his way to ruin, his heart rages against the LORD. 3 The foolishness of man subverts his way, And his heart rages against the LORD.
Wealth maketh many friends; but the poor is separated from his neighbour. 4 Wealth brings many new friends, but a poor man is deserted by his friend. 4 Wealth adds many friends, But a poor man is separated from his friend.
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall not escape. 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will not escape. 5 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will not escape.
Many will intreat the favour of the prince: and every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts. 6 Many seek the favor of a generous man, and every one is a friend to a man who gives gifts. 6 Many will entreat the favor of a generous man, And every man is a friend to him who gives gifts.
All the brethren of the poor do hate him: how much more do his friends go far from him? he pursueth them with words, yet they are wanting to him. 7 All a poor man's brothers hate him; how much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues them with words, but does not have them. 7 All the brothers of a poor man hate him; How much more do his friends go far from him! He pursues [them with] words, [but] they are gone.
He that getteth wisdom loveth his own soul: he that keepeth understanding shall find good. 8 He who gets wisdom loves himself; he who keeps understanding will prosper. 8 He who gets wisdom loves his own soul; He who keeps understanding will find good.
A false witness shall not be unpunished, and he that speaketh lies shall perish. 9 A false witness will not go unpunished, and he who utters lies will perish. 9 A false witness will not go unpunished, And he who tells lies will perish.
Delight is not seemly for a fool; much less for a servant to have rule over princes. 10 It is not fitting for a fool to live in luxury, much less for a slave to rule over princes. 10 Luxury is not fitting for a fool; Much less for a slave to rule over princes.
The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression. 11 Good sense makes a man slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense. 11 A man's discretion makes him slow to anger, And it is his glory to overlook a transgression.
The king's wrath is as the roaring of a lion; but his favour is as dew upon the grass. 12 A king's wrath is like the growling of a lion, but his favor is like dew upon the grass. 12 The king's wrath is like the roaring of a lion, But his favor is like dew on the grass.
A foolish son is the calamity of his father: and the contentions of a wife are a continual dropping. 13 A foolish son is ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling is a continual dripping of rain. 13 A foolish son is destruction to his father, And the contentions of a wife are a constant dripping.
House and riches are the inheritance of fathers: and a prudent wife is from the LORD. 14 House and wealth are inherited from fathers, but a prudent wife is from the LORD. 14 House and wealth are an inheritance from fathers, But a prudent wife is from the LORD.
Slothfulness casteth into a deep sleep; and an idle soul shall suffer hunger. 15 Slothfulness casts into a deep sleep, and an idle person will suffer hunger. 15 Laziness casts into a deep sleep, And an idle man will suffer hunger.
He that keepeth the commandment keepeth his own soul; but he that despiseth his ways shall die. 16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his life; he who despises the word will die. 16 He who keeps the commandment keeps his soul, [But] he who is careless of his ways will die.
He that hath pity upon the poor lendeth unto the LORD; and that which he hath given will he pay him again. 17 He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him for his deed. 17 He who is gracious to a poor man lends to the LORD, And He will repay him for his good deed.
Chasten thy son while there is hope, and let not thy soul spare for his crying. 18 Discipline your son while there is hope; do not set your heart on his destruction. 18 Discipline your son while there is hope, And do not desire his death.
A man of great wrath shall suffer punishment: for if thou deliver him, yet thou must do it again. 19 A man of great wrath will pay the penalty; for if you deliver him, you will only have to do it again. 19 [A man of] great anger shall bear the penalty, For if you rescue [ him,] you will only have to do it again.
Hear counsel, and receive instruction, that thou mayest be wise in thy latter end. 20 Listen to advice and accept instruction, that you may gain wisdom for the future. 20 Listen to counsel and accept discipline, That you may be wise the rest of your days.
There are many devices in a man's heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand. 21 Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the LORD that will be established. 21 Many are the plans in a man's heart, But the counsel of the LORD, it will stand.
The desire of a man is his kindness: and a poor man is better than a liar. 22 What is desired in a man is loyalty, and a poor man is better than a liar. 22 What is desirable in a man is his kindness, And [it is] better to be a poor man than a liar.
The fear of the LORD tendeth to life: and he that hath it shall abide satisfied; he shall not be visited with evil. 23 The fear of the LORD leads to life; and he who has it rests satisfied; he will not be visited by harm. 23 The fear of the LORD [leads] to life, So that one may sleep satisfied, untouched by evil.
A slothful man hideth his hand in his bosom, and will not so much as bring it to his mouth again. 24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish, and will not even bring it back to his mouth. 24 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish, [And] will not even bring it back to his mouth.
Smite a scorner, and the simple will beware: and reprove one that hath understanding, and he will understand knowledge. 25 Strike a scoffer, and the simple will learn prudence; reprove a man of understanding, and he will gain knowledge. 25 Strike a scoffer and the naive may become shrewd, But reprove one who has understanding and he will gain knowledge.
He that wasteth his father, and chaseth away his mother, is a son that causeth shame, and bringeth reproach. 26 He who does violence to his father and chases away his mother is a son who causes shame and brings reproach. 26 He who assaults [his] father [and] drives [his] mother away Is a shameful and disgraceful son.
Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge. 27 Cease, my son, to hear instruction only to stray from the words of knowledge. 27 Cease listening, my son, to discipline, [And you will] stray from the words of knowledge.
An ungodly witness scorneth judgment: and the mouth of the wicked devoureth iniquity. 28 A worthless witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked devours iniquity. 28 A rascally witness makes a mockery of justice, And the mouth of the wicked spreads iniquity.
Judgments are prepared for scorners, and stripes for the back of fools. 29 Condemnation is ready for scoffers, and flogging for the backs of fools. 29 Judgments are prepared for scoffers, And blows for the back of fools.

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. Proverbs 12:1
