Proverbs

Chapter 13

KJV
RSV
NASB
A wise son heareth his father's instruction: but a scorner heareth not rebuke. 1 A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scoffer does not listen to rebuke. 1 A wise son [accepts his] father's discipline, But a scoffer does not listen to rebuke.
A man shall eat good by the fruit of his mouth: but the soul of the transgressors shall eat violence. 2 From the fruit of his mouth a good man eats good, but the desire of the treacherous is for violence. 2 From the fruit of a man's mouth he enjoys good, But the desire of the treacherous is violence.
He that keepeth his mouth keepeth his life: but he that openeth wide his lips shall have destruction. 3 He who guards his mouth preserves his life; he who opens wide his lips comes to ruin. 3 The one who guards his mouth preserves his life; The one who opens wide his lips comes to ruin.
The soul of the sluggard desireth, and hath nothing: but the soul of the diligent shall be made fat. 4 The soul of the sluggard craves, and gets nothing, while the soul of the diligent is richly supplied. 4 The soul of the sluggard craves and [gets] nothing, But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
A righteous man hateth lying: but a wicked man is loathsome, and cometh to shame. 5 A righteous man hates falsehood, but a wicked man acts shamefully and disgracefully. 5 A righteous man hates falsehood, But a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully.
Righteousness keepeth him that is upright in the way: but wickedness overthroweth the sinner. 6 Righteousness guards him whose way is upright, but sin overthrows the wicked. 6 Righteousness guards the one whose way is blameless, But wickedness subverts the sinner.
There is that maketh himself rich, yet hath nothing: there is that maketh himself poor, yet hath great riches. 7 One man pretends to be rich, yet has nothing; another pretends to be poor, yet has great wealth. 7 There is one who pretends to be rich, but has nothing; [Another] pretends to be poor, but has great wealth.
The ransom of a man's life are his riches: but the poor heareth not rebuke. 8 The ransom of a man's life is his wealth, but a poor man has no means of redemption. 8 The ransom of a man's life is his riches, But the poor hears no rebuke.
The light of the righteous rejoiceth: but the lamp of the wicked shall be put out. 9 The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked will be put out. 9 The light of the righteous rejoices, But the lamp of the wicked goes out.
Only by pride cometh contention: but with the well advised is wisdom. 10 By insolence the heedless make strife, but with those who take advice is wisdom. 10 Through presumption comes nothing but strife, But with those who receive counsel is wisdom.
Wealth gotten by vanity shall be diminished: but he that gathereth by labour shall increase. 11 Wealth hastily gotten will dwindle, but he who gathers little by little will increase it. 11 Wealth [obtained] by fraud dwindles, But the one who gathers by labor increases [it.]
Hope deferred maketh the heart sick: but when the desire cometh, it is a tree of life. 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, but a desire fulfilled is a tree of life. 12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick, But desire fulfilled is a tree of life.
Whoso despiseth the word shall be destroyed: but he that feareth the commandment shall be rewarded. 13 He who despises the word brings destruction on himself, but he who respects the commandment will be rewarded. 13 The one who despises the word will be in debt to it, But the one who fears the commandment will be rewarded.
The law of the wise is a fountain of life, to depart from the snares of death. 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, that one may avoid the snares of death. 14 The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, To turn aside from the snares of death.
Good understanding giveth favour: but the way of transgressors is hard. 15 Good sense wins favor, but the way of the faithless is their ruin. 15 Good understanding produces favor, But the way of the treacherous is hard.
Every prudent man dealeth with knowledge: but a fool layeth open his folly. 16 In everything a prudent man acts with knowledge, but a fool flaunts his folly. 16 Every prudent man acts with knowledge, But a fool displays folly.
A wicked messenger falleth into mischief: but a faithful ambassador is health. 17 A bad messenger plunges men into trouble, but a faithful envoy brings healing. 17 A wicked messenger falls into adversity, But a faithful envoy [brings] healing.
Poverty and shame shall be to him that refuseth instruction: but he that regardeth reproof shall be honoured. 18 Poverty and disgrace come to him who ignores instruction, but he who heeds reproof is honored. 18 Poverty and shame [will come] to him who neglects discipline, But he who regards reproof will be honored.
The desire accomplished is sweet to the soul: but it is abomination to fools to depart from evil. 19 A desire fulfilled is sweet to the soul; but to turn away from evil is an abomination to fools. 19 Desire realized is sweet to the soul, But it is an abomination to fools to depart from evil.
He that walketh with wise men shall be wise: but a companion of fools shall be destroyed. 20 He who walks with wise men becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm. 20 He who walks with wise men will be wise, But the companion of fools will suffer harm.
Evil pursueth sinners: but to the righteous good shall be repayed. 21 Misfortune pursues sinners, but prosperity rewards the righteous. 21 Adversity pursues sinners, But the righteous will be rewarded with prosperity.
A good man leaveth an inheritance to his children's children: and the wealth of the sinner is laid up for the just. 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, but the sinner's wealth is laid up for the righteous. 22 A good man leaves an inheritance to his children's children, And the wealth of the sinner is stored up for the righteous.
Much food is in the tillage of the poor: but there is that is destroyed for want of judgment. 23 The fallow ground of the poor yields much food, but it is swept away through injustice. 23 Abundant food [is in] the fallow ground of the poor, But it is swept away by injustice.
He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. 24 He who spares the rod hates his son, but he who loves him is diligent to discipline him. 24 He who spares his rod hates his son, But he who loves him disciplines him diligently.
The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want. 25 The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, but the belly of the wicked suffers want. 25 The righteous has enough to satisfy his appetite, But the stomach of the wicked is in want.

Whoso loveth instruction loveth knowledge: but he that hateth reproof is brutish. Proverbs 12:1
