SUGGESTIONS
FOR THE PREACHER'S LIBRARY
This is a selection, not quite arbitrary but with an element
of arbitrariness about it. The books will not in the main
be very modern, partly for reasons already explained, but
partly also because very new books cannot, for lack of time,
be yet appraised for their abiding worth. The few exceptions
to this will not, it is hoped, betray the confidence they
have gained. The list will not be very enterprising, therefore,
but the student who decides to use it will quickly see some
of the advantages of that: a sound second-hand book at from
one penny to a shilling is not to be despised, and not a few
of the recommendations are in that category.
The
" works of the Truth " are listed first, for reasons
which will be plain. They need no recommendation here: they
are available on ecclesial bookstalls. Lists are published
in The Christadelphian and are available from The Christadelphian
Office. The range of these works has recently expanded considerably,
and there are now (to name no others) expository works on
The Law, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, John, Romans, Ephesians,
Hebrews and Revelation. The files of The Christadelphian of
recent time complete the list still further, and will doubtless
continue to do so. Devotional literature (such as Seasons
of Comfort and the recent Conviction and Conduct and Sunday
Morning) and more general expository works (such as The Oracles
of God) ought not to be neglected, and much of the smaller
literature may be profitable for special purposes.
