Genesis 1
1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.
2 And the earth was without form, and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.
4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.
5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

--- just an interesting thing I noticed when reading- it says that God moved upon the face of the waters- but it doesn't say when they were made...guess it was just part of the earth

In Genesis 1, the Spirit of God was moving over the waters, even before day 1. This suggests that the waters were present on the earth, and merely divided on day 2 by the heaven.

I believe it was John Thomas who suggested that the old world (a previous creation) was drowned in a flood covering the whole earth, which would explain where the waters came from.

Certainly, the spiritual lesson is there - God is moving over the sea of people present on the earth, illuminating some, and separating them from the others in the heavens, where (as on day 3) fruit can come forth from this. The creation story in Genesis 1 typifies the new creation of the saints by God.

Verse 1... The waters were part of the creation of the earth.

... unless you subscribe to the gap theory (inserting a gap between verse 1 and 2 where anything could have happened that is not described) in order to explain the apparent great age of the earth. I believe a number of Christadelphians subscribe to this interpretation of Genesis 1, like I did for a long time.

Just noticed another reference to the idea I think

Psa 24:1 [[A Psalm of David.]] The earth [is] the LORD'S, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.

Psa 24:2 For he hath founded it upon the seas, and established it upon the floods.

SOunds like again the earth was formed on the water

The Bible interprets itself....
I guess he did make the waters in that week

Exodus 20:11 For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.
