In KJV, in Genesis:

1And Adam knew Eve his wife; and she conceived,

'Knew' here obviously meant sexual relations, right?

Similarly in Luke when Mary responded to the angel:

34Then said Mary unto the angel, How shall this be, seeing I know not a man?

'Know' meant sex again?

This kind of translation is only in KJV or NKJV, I was just wondering what were the real words in Hebrew and Greek. Was KJV translated 'literally'?

If so, I guess we are to 'know' our God as intimately as the way we 'know' our spouses, huh? :posh:

[edit] sorry, I guess I should've posted this in Biblical Language... can a mod please move this for me? Thanks!

:shy: We know him by the forgiveness of our sin.

Hey Billi

Come to think of it, knowing God is like a marrage only much better. It is very intimate and lasts for ever.

We are made at one with, like with the word atone.

I like what Jesus said in his prayer in John 17:21-24.

We are made one.

In the Old Testament it has the idea of knowing by experience. That's how it can relate to a sexual relationship. However, a sexual relationship is not the only way to know someone by experience.

For example, I know what someone is like by speaking to them and observing their characteristics. The more time I spend and the more I observe their character and understand them the better I know them. I know them by experience because I've experienced who they are by observing them.

It can apply to a sexual relationship, but isn't exclusive of it.
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Anyway, yeah, I guess it's suppose to be intimate. Sexual relations certainly can be pretty intimate... However, sexual relationships could also be very superficial too... as in casual sex or prostitution... fake intimacy.

Knowing God is to intimately know him with genuine intimacy, right? :bye:
