The earliest recorded interpretation of this part of Revelation 12 in detail is by Hippolytus (200 AD), who interpreted the man child as the members of the Church, and his rule with the rod of iron as the event (yet future, says Hippolytus), at which the Church becomes 'the instructor of the nations'.

He viewed pagan Rome as the current persecutor of Christians, foresaw a future time when the Christians would be 'the instructor of the nations', and then subsequent to that, a time when AntiChrist and his system would arise, at which time the Christians would be persecuted by an apostate Christian system, and flee.

Of particular note is the exposition of Andreas (520 AD), who was the first to interpret the man child ruling with the iron rod as representing the Christians victorious over the pagans.
Miserere mei Deus,
Secundum magnam misericordiam tuam.
Et secundum multitudinem miserationum tuarum
dele iniquitatem meam.

‘John Wesley once received a note which said, “The Lord has told me to tell you that He doesn’t need your book-learning, your Greek, and your Hebrew.”

Wesley answered “Thank you, sir. Your letter was superfluous, however, as I already knew the Lord has no need for my ‘book-learning,’ as you put it. However—although the Lord has not directed me to say so—on my own responsibility I would like to say to you that the Lord does not need your ignorance, either.”
