Heard about this on the radio this morning

Apparently this word never existed 7 months ago - not even on Google - as it was created only recently with the printing of Eagleman's fiction book (called "Sum") and "Possibilianism" is now an accepted word to celebrate human ignorance, and there also Facebook Groups for Possibilians so it the idea has quite a following.

I guess it's better to be a Possibilian than an atheist or agnostic, but maybe not so good if it means examining and rejecting truth one has been brought up with - which is what Eagleman challenges people to do.

It is based on Eagleman's work of fiction. I guess it is an interesting concept in some ways to challenge our inherited belief systems, but I think most thinking Christians/Christadelphians who are sensitive to the Lord and His Word do that naturally anyway........

What's the difference between a possibilian and an agnostic, then?
And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.

I really haven't a clue. I did wonder that myself.

LOL. Dawn, I was expecting some detailed explanation!

Perhaps the possibilian says, "Well, it could be true", whereas the agnostic says. "We can't really know".

Sounds like 'Possibilianism' = 'sitting-on-the-fence ism'.

....lol....yes that's one way of putting it, or maybe they just admit that they know they don't know whereas the agnostic just doesn't know. Or as Daysha says - sitting on the fencism!!

Good old Dayshakiwi, well done for providing this but have you got an emoticon somewhere for this one?

I think there should be one on BTDF because there is quote a lot of "fence sitting" from time to time, or is that just my cynical perspective? Probably! :)

I must have been asleep when this movement was spawned. Let's see what David Eagleman has to say in his book Sum: Forty Tales From the Afterlife. No, I haven't bought it. I've merely read a small excerpt, so it is possible I may be misjudging it. Perhaps.

Quote

In the afterlife you discover that God understands the complexities of life. She had originally submitted to peer pressure when She structured Her universe like all the other gods had, with a binary categorization of people into good and evil. But it didn’t take long for Her to realize that humans could be good in many ways and simultaneously corrupt and meanspirited in other ways. How was She to arbitrate who goes to Heaven and who to Hell?

The most important aspect of Her new system is that everyone is treated equally. There is no longer fire for some and harp music for others. The afterlife is no longer defined by cots versus waterbeds, raw potatoes versus sushi, hot water versus champagne. Everyone is a brother to all, and for the first time an idea has been realized that never came to fruition on Earth: true equality. <1>

I never thought I would say this, but I actually prefer the strident atheism of Richard Dawkins to this nonsense. At least he unapologetically stands for something.
I see what you mean.
