Genetic Geometry Takes Shape

Inside the cell’s nucleus, the double helix folds up in myriad loops and twists. The quest to unravel this structure is revealing the subtle genetic orchestration of all life on Earth.

By: Ivan Amato

"The nuclei from a half-million human cells could all fit inside a single poppy seed. Yet within each and every nucleus resides genomic machinery that is incredibly vast, at least from a molecular point of view. It has billions of parts, many used to activate and silence genes — an arrangement that allows individual cells to specialize as brain cells, heart cells and some 200 other different cell types. What’s more, each cell’s genome is atwitter with millions of mobile pieces that swarm throughout the nucleus and latch on here and there to tweak the genetic program. Every so often, the genomic machine replicates itself."

"Hummingbird tongues are tiny pumps that suck up nectar—not merely passive strawlike structures as long thought, new research suggests. In a few studies of lab-reared hummers, scientists noted that the birds sometimes used capillary action—the tendency of a liquid to be pulled into a narrow space, even upward against gravity ..."

Atacama Desert Blooms Pink After Historic Rainfall (Photos)

by Tia Ghose, Senior Writer   |   October 29, 2015 12:07pm ET

"The Atacama Desert, one of the driest places on Earth, is experiencing a riot of color as a rare springtime bloom of flowers covers every hillside.

The explosion of color is the result of rains that swept through the region earlier this year, watering seeds that had lain dormant in the ground for years.

The Atacama Desert typically gets just 0.6 inches (15 millimeters) a year in rainfall, though some places in the region, such as Arica, receive even less, experiencing between 0.04 and 0.12 inches (1 and 3 mm) of rain a year."

An Aurora Called 'Steve'? Strange Sky Phenomenon Investigated

By Sarah Lewin, Space.com Staff Writer | April 24, 2017 04:32pm ET

"Meet "Steve," a strange, new aurora feature discovered by citizen scientists and verified by the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm satellites.

Eric Donovan, a researcher at University of Calgary in Canada, first heard of "Steve" while talking to members of a Facebook group called the Alberta Aurora Chasers, who coordinate to track and photograph the northern lights in the Canadian sky (Alberta is a province in western Canada). While the colorful lights of an aurora normally ripple horizontally across the sky, Steve formed a distinctive purplish or greenish vertical streak."

Radiocarbon Dating Gets a Postmodern Makeover

April 25, 2017 by Emily Litvack

"For decades, radiocarbon dating has been a way for scientists to get a rough picture of when once-living stuff lived. The method has been revolutionary and remains one of the most commonly used dating methods to study the past.

Charlotte Pearson says it's ready for a makeover.

Pearson, an assistant professor of dendrochronology at the University of Arizona, studies the past lives of trees to better understand the history of civilizations. Dendrochronology and radiocarbon dating have intertwined histories, she explains, with roots firmly planted at the UA.

A 1929 edition of National Geographic boasts, "The Secret Of The Southwest Solved By Talkative Tree Rings." The 35-page article, penned in whimsical prose, was written by Andrew Douglass, the UA scientist who invented tree ring science."

Morning Glory Seeds are Tough Enough for an Interplanetary Trip

By Katherine Kornei

May. 1, 2017 , 3:00 PM

"Natural sunscreens help morning glory seeds survive doses of ultraviolet (UV) radiation that would burn most humans to a crisp, according to a new study. The hardy seeds of the common flowering plant would probably even survive a voyage between planets, say the researchers. This might help researchers decide which species to send on future missions to Mars, a place that is bombarded with UV light because of its thin atmosphere. It also validates the concept of panspermia, the idea that life might have hopscotched through our solar system—or others—by hitching a ride on asteroids or comets."

Meet the Scientist Who Turns Data into Music—and Listen to the Sound of a Neutron Star

By Giorgia Guglielmi

"From stock trends to changes in Earth’s temperature, data that vary over time are usually represented in graphs and charts. How boring! What if, instead, one could listen to the sudden drop of a stock price or the steady increase of global temperatures? Enter sonification, the process of transforming flat data into mellow soundwaves."

How Lunar and Solar Eclipses Shed Light on Biblical Events

Non-Technical - Jul 29, 2017 - by Rodger C. Young MA

"Although there are two to five solar eclipses visible from some place on Earth in any given year, the total solar eclipse predicted for August 21, 2017 has attracted more attention than any eclipse in recent memory. During this event, the moon’s umbra (complete shadow), first falling on the Pacific Ocean, will make landfall in Oregon and then traverse the North American continent before darkening the ocean off South Carolina one and one-half hours later (for details, see https://eclipse2017...._map/index.html). During this time, virtually all of North America will be partially darkened by the penumbra (partial shadow) of the eclipse.

Due to the great international attention devoted to this eclipse, there has been the expected spate of unreasonable speculations about its being an end-time event. Without advocating any such speculations, we at ABR have thought that the subject of eclipses does have some relevance to events in the Bible. This was the subject of an article by ABR Associate Rodger Young in the Spring 2013 issue of Bible and Spade, which is reproduced below."
