I don't think I've written about it yet... the time I said "Cheers". Now I know to some of you that might sound like a "non-event" lol oh how it was that and yet SO MUCH MORE!!!

I used to work at a tourist attraction thousands of people a day I'd talk to and see..From all over the world I thought it was super neato to hear all the different accents- (insert the fact that I cannot immitate an accent at all!!!) okay so I'd hear Canadians, Englanders?(what are English people called?), Australians, New Zealanders (and incidentally, if you ever mistake the two accents DUCK! because its like a massive offense or something-- well at least in my experience.. so I've learned not to guess if I wasn't 100% sure when speaking with someone) okay so you get the point there are a variety of accents and languages that I encounter- so along with my amazement with their accents I also found it necessary to take on some of their vernacular-- hmm am I using that word correctly? anyway.. so if I was talking to certain people I don't say get in line.. I say get int he cue .. or you ride an elevator or you ride a lift... for years there had been one phrase or word that I just wasn't sure about... it was....

CHEERS!

Countless time.. people would say this to me at the end of a transactoin and there i was... unsure of myself.. umm what do I say? Thank you? Cheers back? twiddle my thumbs... we just don't say that around here so I didn't know what it really meant...
sometimes I'd ask them what it meant because I am soooo lost- well anyway---

One day I was sitting next to my friend Neil- the type of person who makes you laugh constantly anyway.. well this of all days was a day to laugh....

So I decided that I was tired of not knowing what to say-- and having an awkward moment I decided to beat them to it-- I had a foreign guest at my window and at the end of the transaction it happened...

In my little totally AMERICAN MIDWEST anything but smooth attempt I said.
"Cheers"
Neil looked over at me covered him mouth wiht his hands to keep in the laughter and started keeling over... I waited... in great hopes to see what the response will be-- all of my years spent waiting now came to this.... and you know what they said???

NOTHING.. the same awkwardness was there in the silence... I looked at them and at neil out of the corner of my eyes I saw he was losing it= I was fighting back the laughter too-- and my guest just said nothing and walked away

CRUSHED was I--- and never again have I said "Cheers" because I just don't think I'll be able to keep a straight long enough to voice it. The end.

Cheers :)

That's funny!
